Chateau de la Maltroye Chassagne-Montrachet 2012

A beautiful Chardonnay from an impressively restored Chateau (the vaulted cellar dates from the 15th century) helmed by renowned winemaker Jean-Pierre Cornut. His grandfather purchased the chateau in 1940, along with 80% of their current vines. The domaine today covers around 15 hectares – large for a private domaine – 2 of which are Santenay, the rest is Chassagne, 40% of the total is red.

Fermentation was started in stainless steel and then transferred to barrels kept at ground level in a temperature controlled cellar. Jean-Pierre is known to warm the cellar to prolong fermentation, or conversely to cool the barrels to help precipitate tartrates. The final result is a wine devoted entirely to the representation of the immaculate terroir. The 2012 is a revelation that is intensely focused, high toned, and concentrated with the perfect integration of oak. The palate is simultaneously rich yet soft and smooth with strong acidity and a touch of coconut on the finish. Delicious now but will certainly continue to evolve and mature over the next decade or more.
