Vega Sicilia Valbuena 2009

165.00

The ‘09 Valbuena may somehow top the much vaunted ’05 benchmark. The wine matured for five months in 20,000-liter oak vats, 16 months in new barriques (equal parts French and American oak), four months in used barrels and then four more months in the vats before being bottled in May 2011. 180,000 bottles produced. It has some reductive notes and would benefit from some time in a decanter, where you’d start appreciating its background of cherries which feels very classical and serious. In glass the wine displays an opaque ruby coloring and a refined nose dominated by spice and mineral accents. Aromas may include dark berries, cherry pit, exotic leather, lemon peel, sawdust, boysenberry and potpourri with a warm, toasty sophistication. The lively, intricate palate is well-built with fine, polished tannins, great acidity with elegant notes of baked, heady flavors of black fruits, pepper with chocolate and vanilla as well as juicy acidity. smokey cherry and blackcurrant flavors complicated by vanilla, mocha and licorice. Shows impressive power and vivacity on the youthfully tannic finish, with the smoke and spice notes strongly repeating. Tobacco, cedar and sanguine notes mingle with dried cherry, spice and orange peel flavors in this firm red. The floral finish blooms pleasantly, showing harmony and depth. A traditional style.

The storied Vega Sicilia produces Valbuena not as a second wine, but rather a distinct expression of particular parcels on their property, a separate selection from what goes into Vega Sicilia. It is every bit as delicious, a bit less imposingly structured, and yet very age-worthy as well.
